Description: Clove is derived from a slender evergreen tree that grows up to 12m. At the start of the rainy season, long buds appear. These change colour and are beaten from the tree and dried. These are the cloves sold commercially.

Colour: light golden yellow

Common uses: Clove bud oil is an effective agent for minor pains and aches, especially dental pain, and is helpful when battling colds and flu.

Blends well with: spice oils, citronella, grapefruit, lemon, orange, peppermint, rosemary, rose.

Aromatic scent: smells spicy and rich just like cloves.

History: The word clove comes from the Latin word ‘clavus’, meaning nail, since the shaft and head of the clove bud resembles a nail. Cloves and nutmeg were among the most precious of items in Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries when they were worth more than their weight in gold.

Cautions: Very potent and not to be used on sensitive skin. Avoid use during pregnancy.
