My day usually begins with...snoozing my alarm five times between 6am and 6:30am until finally rolling out of bed wondering why I’m so tired, and ends with…me sitting up in bed at 1am with my phone pressed into my face scrolling through puppy videos.
How long have you been part of the Go Native team?
I’ve been a full-time employee for the last seven or eight years, but Elinor McEwan (who founded Go Native) is my Mum! So I’ve seen it grow and evolve since its conception around 16 years ago.
What's something people would be surprised to learn about your job?
You get surprisingly strong! We’re lifting large quantities of products around the warehouse everyday so, yeah, Alice, Elinor, Liz and I are basically the Amazonian warriors from Wonder Woman.
Did you make any New Year's resolutions for 2018? What were they?
To not make plans that I knew I would immediately want to cancel! If I make a date with you in 2018 I am going to show up. Like 58% definitely going to show up.
When did you first discover the joys of making your own beauty products?
Well I grew up watching Mum do it so I almost can’t remember. I guess I started using only things I made myself in my late teens? Basically when I started flatting and realised it was cheap and easy. And I could only “cook” toast at that stage, so I mean, really easy.
Right: Mother-daughter team Elinor and Chelsea.
Ingredient you're currently loving?
I love chia seed oil because it’s such a short oil (which means it absorbs quickly) that I can use it in my morning routine in place of moisturiser and still leave the house without looking like an oil slick.
I love simple recipes so whipping, literally whipping, up a body butter is my go-to. Just shea butter and a base oil (like organic camellia oil), whipped together with an electric beater. Getting air into it makes it go so much further and helps it really glide onto your skin. And of course you can scent it with whatever you like (and even add some sparkles if you dig the disco ball look).
Tell us something we'd be surprised to know about you?
I’m also an actor and a comedy writer. Elizabeth McMenamin, who also works at Go Native, and I have written several theatre shows and a web series together. So maybe you’ll see our faces up on the (tiny) silver (laptop) screen one day.
And - because we all love a recommendation - are you binge-watching/listening/reading anything good at the moment?
Big Littles Lies. Just finished watching it for the second time. Absolutely incredible. Do it.
What's the best part of working at Go Native?
Hmmm. Well I smell great all the time? I mean, I smell like an amalgamation of every single essential oil we sell, all the time. Some would call that great, some would call that overwhelming, I’ll let you make up your own mind.
But really, getting to work with my Mum and my friends is really incredible. I love experimenting with all our beautiful raw ingredients. But ultimately working for a company that I believe in ethically and environmentally, that helps educate people about what they’re putting on their body at the same time as saving them money?… I mean that’s a pretty good day at the office.
