Botanical name: Cymbopogon winterianus
Plant part: leaves
Extraction method: steam distillation
Description: Citronella oil is extracted from a resilient grass native to Sri Lanka and Java. It is a very aromatic perennial that grows to 1m in height.
Colour: dark yellow
Common uses: Citronella is most well known as an insecticide but it is also credited with having therapeutic properties as an antiseptic, parasitic, tonic, and as a stimulant. Many insecticides contain citronella and it is often combined with cedarwood to produce a more-pleasant-smelling repellent. This oil can help with minor infections, to assist in combating colds and flu, for excessive perspiration, and for conditioning oily skin and hair.
Aromatic scent: Has a well-rounded lemon citrus scent but is much stronger and more woody than lemon oil.
History: Citronella oil was one of the world’s most dominant insect repellents before the introduction of DDT. Recent history shows that the oil is again becoming the product of choice for health-conscious customers.
Cautions: Citronella may irritate sensitive skin.
Safety data: Avoid during pregnancy; skin irritant (dilute before using externally); may trigger epileptic seizures in susceptible individuals.
