Description: The camphor tree can grow up to 35 metres and camphor is found in every part of the tree. It is an evergreen tree looking not unlike linden. It grows to a great size and has many branches, white flowers, and its fruit a red berry much like cinnamon. Camphor oil is extracted by steam from the chipped wood, root stumps and branches. It is then rectified under vacuum and filter pressed. White camphor oil is the first distillation fraction.

History: In China and Japan, Cinnamomum camphora can often grow as old as 1000 years. To produce oil it must be at least 50 years old. Camphor was well known as a remedy against the plague in Persia (now Iran). It was also used in embalming. The Chinese used camphor wood to build ships and temples because of the wood's durable and aromatic properties.

Aromatic scent: It has a light consistency and strong aroma.

Aromatherapy: The strong, invigorating scent of camphor essential oil is often used in aromatherapy to create an uplifting and refreshing atmosphere. Inhaling its aroma can help clear the mind, promote mental clarity, and reduce feelings of anxiety or stress.

Insect repellent: Camphor essential oil is known for its strong scent that can be unpleasant for insects. It's often used as a natural insect repellent to keep pests like mosquitoes, flies, and moths away from living spaces. Placing camphor oil in diffusers, vaporizers, or sachets can help deter insects.

Air freshener: The fresh and invigorating scent of camphor oil makes it a popular choice for homemade air fresheners and room sprays. Its pleasant aroma can help eliminate odours and create a clean and revitalising environment.

Cleaning and disinfecting: Camphor oil's antimicrobial properties are sometimes utilised for cleaning purposes. Adding a few drops of camphor oil to natural cleaning solutions can potentially help disinfect surfaces and freshen the air in your home.

Moth repellent: Camphor essential oil is commonly used to protect clothing and other items from moth damage. Placing camphor blocks or sachets infused with camphor oil in closets and storage areas can help prevent moth infestations.

Respiratory support: Camphor oil's strong aroma can provide a perceived sense of respiratory relief even when not used as a direct treatment. Inhaling the scent can create a sensation of clear breathing.

Cultural uses: In some cultures, camphor has symbolic significance and is used in religious rituals, ceremonies, and traditional practices. Its aroma is believed to purify spaces and ward off negative energies.

Safety data: Camphor oil is powerful oil and should be used with care. Overdosing can cause convulsions and vomiting. Pregnant women or people suffering from epilepsy and asthma should not use it.
