Rouge Red (D&C Red Lake 7)
Rouge Red (D&C Red 7 Lake) is a vibrant, cosmetic-grade pigment that produces a rich, intense red. It is particularly popular in lipsticks and other lip-safe cosmetics, where it offers a strong, long-lasting colour payoff.
This pigment can be used in place of carmine, making it an excellent choice for creating vegan-friendly formulations without compromising on depth or vibrancy. Its intensity means only a very small amount is needed to achieve striking results.
Rouge Red is a lake pigment, created by combining a dye with a substrate such as calcium or aluminium to produce a colourant that is more stable in oil-based formulations. It disperses well in lipsticks, balms, and pressed powders, providing consistent, even colour.
Because it is extremely light, the volume of this pigment differs from other powders:
-
3g will fill a 30ml pot (compared to 10g or more of most other pigments).
-
50g will fill a 500ml pot.
This makes careful measuring essential, as you’ll be working more by volume than weight.
