Rich in vitamin C and other antioxidants such as lycopene, watermelon extract is a great protective ingredient for reducing UV damage.

Watermelon extract works as a humectant, drawing moisture into the skin, adding a hydration boost to your products, leaving skin feeling softer and more supple.

The antioxidants in watermelon extract can help to protect against free radicals, which damage the skin and speed up the ageing process by breaking down collagen production.

Due to watermelon extract’s high vitamin C content it is said to be able to help brighten skin, reduce the appearance of fine lines, calm inflammation, reduce redness and help to speed up the skin cell turnover process.

Topical vitamin C is said to help protect the skin from UV damage (though is not a substitute for sunscreen) caused by prolonged sun exposure by reducing the amount of free radical formation and sunburn cells. Exposure to UV light has also shown to decrease the naturally occurring vitamin C levels in the skin, making the topical application of vitamin C helpful in restoring these photo protectant levels.

Watermelon is also rich in lycopene which is said to, when applied topically, defend against the harmful effects of UVB radiation. UVB radiation can deplete an important substance in your skin known as PCNA (proliferating cell nuclear antigen), which is vital for DNA synthesis and cell repair.

In addition, it is said that lycopene may also protect your skin through its ability to reduce inflammation, encourage cell renewal, and inhibit the activity of enzymes involved in the destruction of collagen, overall helping to maintain skin’s natural firmness.
