Ghassoul Clay
Also known as Moroccan lava clay or rhassoul clay.
Ghassoul clay is a fine, silky, pale grey powder with subtle pink-brown undertones. It is naturally rich in minerals such as silica, magnesium, and calcium, and is valued for its ability to gently cleanse and absorb excess oil without stripping the skin.
Traditionally used in North African bathing rituals, ghassoul clay is known for its high absorption capacity, helping lift impurities from the skin and hair. When mixed with water or hydrosol, it creates a smooth, almost lubricating paste that cleanses while providing gentle exfoliation. Unlike soap, it cleans without foaming, making it a popular choice for facial masks, body treatments, and even hair cleansing, particularly for those avoiding surfactants.
The name ghassoul comes from the Arabic word ghassala, meaning “to wash”, reflecting its long history as a natural cleansing material.
