Camphor essential oil

Camphor essential oil is a powerful, intensely aromatic essential oil with a distinctive fresh, penetrating and camphorous scent.

Steam distilled from the wood of the camphor tree (Cinnamomum camphora), the crude oil is further rectified to produce white camphor essential oil. The camphor tree is a large evergreen native to Asia and can grow up to 35 metres tall.

With its strong, clean aroma, Camphor Essential Oil is commonly used in soapmaking, home fragrance, aromatherapy blends and household products, where only a small amount is needed.

Aroma

Strong, fresh, penetrating and distinctly camphorous.

Camphor is considered a top note and blends well with essential oils including basil, cajeput, chamomile, lavender and rosemary.

Uses

Camphor Essential Oil can be used in:

  • Soap and cosmetic formulations
  • Aromatherapy blends
  • Diffusers and vaporizers
  • Room sprays and home fragrance
  • Household cleaning products
  • Insect and moth-repellent blends

Because of its particularly strong aroma, we recommend starting with a small amount and adjusting as required for your formulation.

A little history

In China and Japan, Cinnamomum camphora trees can live for hundreds of years, with some specimens reportedly reaching around 1,000 years old.

Camphor has a long history of use throughout Asia and the Middle East, while the aromatic and durable timber of the camphor tree has traditionally been valued for building, storage and other practical uses.
