Polysorbate 20
Polysorbate 20 is a non-ionic solubiliser used to disperse small amounts of essential oils or fragrance oils into water-based formulations. It helps prevent oils from separating or floating on the surface, creating clear, stable products.
It’s most commonly used in linen sprays, room sprays, body mists, and similar water-based products. Polysorbate 20 is also well suited to bath products, where it helps ensure essential oils are evenly dispersed throughout the bath water rather than pooling on top.
Formulation tips
Polysorbate 20 should be pre-mixed with essential or fragrance oils before being added to the water phase. As a general starting point, use 5–10 times the amount of Polysorbate 20 relative to the oil phase. The exact ratio can vary depending on the oils used and the clarity required, so testing small batches is recommended.
