Citronella essential oil, certified organic

Citronella essential oil is steam distilled from the leaves of Cymbopogon winterianus, a hardy, aromatic grass traditionally grown in Sri Lanka and Java and now widely cultivated in India. The plant grows in dense clumps up to around 1m tall and is valued for its strong, fresh citrus aroma with woody undertones.

Long before synthetic repellents became common, citronella oil was one of the most widely used natural solutions for deterring insects. In recent years, it has seen a resurgence in popularity as people return to plant-based ingredients for home fragrance, outdoor living, and natural formulations.

Citronella has a medium-strength aroma that is bright and energising without being overpowering, making it a versatile choice across a wide range of applications.

Common Uses

Aromatherapy
Citronella has a fresh, uplifting scent that can help create a light, energising atmosphere. It is often used in diffuser blends intended to feel clean, open, and refreshing.

Air freshening
Its crisp citrus aroma makes citronella a popular addition to natural air fresheners and diffuser blends, particularly for neutralising heavy or lingering odours.

Household cleaning
Citronella essential oil is commonly used in DIY cleaning products, where it contributes both fragrance and a fresh, outdoorsy feel.

Candles and incense
Widely used in outdoor candles, incense, and wax melts, citronella helps create a pleasant atmosphere in gardens, patios, and outdoor living areas.

Outdoor and household use
Citronella is best known for its role in outdoor products designed for use in warmer months. It is commonly included in blends intended for use in gardens, decks, and entryways.

Mood and energy
Its bright, citrus-forward scent is often described as invigorating and can add an uplifting note to blends used during the day.
