Douglas fir essential oil, NZ

The Douglas Fir Difference

With its citrusy top notes layered over a smooth, resinous base, Douglas fir essential oil offers a uniquely fresh, green aroma that sets it apart from other conifer oils. Grown and distilled in Aotearoa New Zealand using freshly harvested foliage, its scent reflects the purity of its origin, bright, clear, and forest-sweet.

This essential oil is highly versatile and suited to a wide range of applications:

  • Aromatherapy & Home Fragrance: Its grounding yet refreshing scent brings a forest-like ambiance to indoor spaces. Ideal for diffusers and oil burners, it can help create a calm, clear environment.

  • Air Freshening: The crisp, coniferous aroma makes a natural choice for freshening rooms, linens, or workspaces.

  • Natural Cleaning: Can be added to DIY cleaning sprays and surface products to enhance the scent and support a clean-smelling home.

  • Cosmetics & Skincare: Popular in personal care for its clean, green scent and inclusion in formulations like deodorants, balms, and oil blends. A great addition to rinse-off and leave-on products alike.

  • Seasonal Blends: Its association with traditional Christmas trees makes it a festive favourite. Adds a nostalgic and uplifting note to winter products such as candles, room sprays, and gift sets.

  • Focus & Clarity: Often used in environments where a fresh, invigorating aroma is desired, such as work or study spaces.

  • Insect-Repelling Use: Traditionally used in natural formulations aimed at deterring insects, especially for outdoor areas.

  • Sauna & Wellness Routines: Well suited to sauna rituals, where it contributes to a refreshing aromatic experience. Just a few drops in a sauna bucket can help enhance the overall atmosphere of heat therapy.

As a middle note in fragrance blends, Douglas fir pairs beautifully with citrus, wood, spice, and resin. Its crisp yet soft aroma makes it a compelling addition to natural perfumes and aromatherapeutic compositions.

Crafted Sustainably in Aotearoa New Zealand

Harvested from regenerating hedge-rows in FSC®-certified forests, this Douglas fir essential oil is the result of over 160 years of forestry expertise combined with cutting-edge distillation. Trees are not felled for oil production, instead foliage is selectively trimmed on a 5-year rotation, allowing the trees to remain standing and continue regenerating naturally.

The entire process, from trimming to distillation, takes place within just four hours. This ensures a vibrant, true-to-nature scent and avoids the off-notes sometimes associated with older or scavenged material. The oil is produced using an in-forest distillation facility powered by renewable biomass. Woodchip by-product is fed back into a custom boiler, not only fuelling the distillery itself but supplying surplus energy to local businesses as well.

Using artesian water sourced from deep within the South Island of Aotearoa New Zealand, this small-batch oil is distilled with precision temperature and steam controls to preserve delicate volatiles often lost in conventional processes. Each batch is third-party tested for quality and purity, resulting in a 100% pure Douglas fir essential oil with a fresh, citrusy-wood aroma and a traceable, low-carbon footprint.
