Ginger essential oil, certified organic

Description: Ginger essential oil is steam distilled from the fresh rhizomes of Zingiber officinale, a perennial herb that grows up to 1m tall and is known for its thick, spreading underground stems. Distilling from fresh ginger (rather than dried) gives this oil a brighter, more vibrant aroma with slightly sharper top notes.

History: Believed to have originated in India, China, and Java, ginger has also been cultivated in Africa and the West Indies. It made its way to Europe between the 10th and 15th centuries, where it was prized both as a culinary spice and medicinal herb. References to ginger can be found in ancient Sanskrit and Chinese texts, as well as writings by the Greeks, Romans, and Arabs.

Consistency: Light
Strength of Aroma: Medium to strong

Common Uses:

  • Aromatherapy: Ginger essential oil’s warm, spicy aroma is invigorating and comforting. It’s often used in diffusers to promote relaxation, lift mood, and ease mental fatigue or stress.

  • Massage: When diluted in a carrier oil, ginger essential oil makes an excellent addition to massage blends. Its warming properties may help ease muscle tension, joint stiffness, and boost circulation.

  • Cleaning Products: Ginger’s naturally refreshing scent and mild antimicrobial properties make it a great addition to homemade surface sprays and other natural cleaning formulations.

  • Air Freshener: Use ginger essential oil alone or blended with citrus or woodsy oils to create personalised air fresheners. It helps neutralise unpleasant odours and leaves a clean, energising scent behind.

  • Insect Repellent: The strong aroma of ginger may help deter certain insects. It can be incorporated into DIY bug sprays or added to candles and outdoor diffusers.
