Petitgrain essential oil
Petitgrain Essential Oil is steam distilled from the leaves and young twigs of the bitter orange tree (Citrus aurantium), the same tree that also produces Neroli Essential Oil from its blossoms and Bitter Orange Essential Oil from its peel. It has a beautifully fresh, green citrus aroma with delicate floral notes and a subtle woody undertone, making it a favourite in natural perfumery, skincare, and aromatherapy.
The name petitgrain, meaning "little grains" in French, dates back to when the oil was distilled from the tree's small, unripe fruit. Today, it is more sustainably produced from the leaves and twigs, yielding the same refreshing aroma while making use of a renewable part of the plant.
Petitgrain blends exceptionally well with both citrus and floral essential oils and is widely used in facial care, massage blends, soaps, candles, perfumes, and home fragrance products. Its crisp yet calming aroma is particularly popular in products designed to create a fresh, balanced atmosphere.
Common Uses
Aromatherapy: Petitgrain is widely used in aromatherapy for its fresh, green citrus aroma that many people find balancing and refreshing. It is often diffused to create a calm, uplifting atmosphere.
Natural Perfumery: Petitgrain is a valuable ingredient in natural perfumes, colognes and botanical fragrance blends. Its bright green citrus notes help bridge citrus top notes with floral heart notes.
Skincare: Petitgrain is commonly incorporated into facial oils, creams, balms and body care products, where its fresh aroma complements a wide range of formulations.
Soapmaking: Petitgrain performs well in cold process soap and is often blended with citrus, floral and woody essential oils to create sophisticated fragrance profiles.
