Polysorbate 80
A versatile solubiliser used to blend small amounts of oil into water-based products, and as a co-emulsifier in rinse-off formulations.
Essential for dispersing carrier and essential oils evenly in water-based products such as bath oils, cleansers, and sprays. It ensures oils disperse evenly rather than sitting on the surface, helping prevent slippery bathwater and promoting a smooth, stable texture.
In cleansing oils and balms, Polysorbate 80 aids rinse-off and improves the feel of the final product. It also helps reduce residue in massage oils, making laundering easier.
Made from sorbitol and fatty acids, Polysorbate 80 is produced from RSPO-certified sustainable palm sources.
How to use
- Add to the oil phase (hot or cold process).
- In oil-based formulas such as cleansing or massage oils, simply stir to combine.
- To disperse oils in water, use approximately 2–3 × the weight of the oil being solubilised (testing may be needed depending on the oil type).
- Typical usage rate: 1–20 %.
- Always test small batches first, as the required ratio can vary depending on the oil or fragrance being used.
Formulation example – Water-dispersible massage oil (100 g)
- 76 g Almond oil
- 24 g Polysorbate 80
