Raspberry seed oil
Raspberry seed oil is a nourishing, lightweight carrier oil cold pressed from the seeds of the raspberry fruit. Naturally rich in essential fatty acids, particularly linoleic acid (omega-6) and alpha-linolenic acid (omega-3), it is a lovely oil for supporting soft, supple and well-conditioned skin.
Its high essential fatty acid content makes it particularly useful in formulations designed for dry, dehydrated or mature skin. These fatty acids help support the skin's natural barrier and reduce moisture loss, while the oil itself provides emollience without the heavy or greasy feel of some richer carrier oils.
Raspberry seed oil is also naturally rich in antioxidant compounds, including tocopherols (vitamin E), which help protect the oil itself from oxidation and make it a popular addition to facial oils, serums and other nourishing skincare formulations.
Skin feel
Lightweight and silky, with a smooth finish. Raspberry seed oil can be used alone as a facial or body oil or blended with other carrier oils to adjust the richness and skin feel of a formulation.
Skin types
Suitable for most skin types and particularly well suited to dry, dehydrated, sensitive and mature skin. Its relatively light texture also makes it a useful option in facial formulations where a less heavy oil is preferred.
How to use
Apply 2–3 drops directly to clean, slightly damp skin, morning or night, or incorporate into facial oils, oil serums, creams, lotions, balms and body products.
It can be used at up to 100% or blended with other carrier oils such as jojoba, camellia, rosehip or squalane to create a customised skin feel and fatty acid profile.
Formulating tip
Raspberry seed oil is particularly high in polyunsaturated fatty acids, so it is more oxidation-sensitive than oils high in monounsaturated fatty acids. Store it carefully away from heat and light and consider adding an antioxidant such as vitamin E when using it in formulations. Vitamin E can help slow oxidation of the oils but is not a preservative.
A note about sun protection
You may see raspberry seed oil described online as having a natural SPF or providing UV protection. While components of the oil may absorb some UV light, this does not make raspberry seed oil a tested or reliable sunscreen and no SPF should be assumed. It should never be used as a substitute for a properly formulated and tested broad-spectrum sunscreen.
