Tranexamic acid is a highly regarded cosmetic active that has become a favourite in modern formulations for creating the appearance of a more even, luminous complexion. Formulators value it for its ability to support clarity and help improve the look of uneven tone, discolouration and post-blemish marks, especially in leave-on products such as serums and essences.
Lightweight, gentle and well tolerated, tranexamic acid works beautifully in brightening-style formulations and performs exceptionally well alongside niacinamide, vitamin B5 (panthenol) and hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid. It is water soluble, easy to use and suitable for most skin types, making it a versatile choice for both beginner and advanced formulators.
How to Use
- Usage rate: Generally 1% to 3%
- Water soluble, add to the water phase
- May require gentle heating to assist full solubility
- Suitable for pH 5 to 8 systems
- Commonly used in: brightening serums, essences, toners, moisturisers, gel serums, sheet mask solutions
Formulation Notes
- Best added to the water phase before emulsification or gelling
- Can be combined with niacinamide, vitamin E, D-panthenol and similar supportive ingredients
- Works well for sensitive skin focused formulations

Suitable for most skin types, including skin prone to uneven tone or discolouration. Ideal for leave on formulations.
Formulation Notes (pH Guidance)
Tranexamic acid naturally dissolves in water at a neutral to slightly alkaline pH (around 7–8). This is completely normal for the raw ingredient.
However, when used at typical skincare levels (1–3%) it does not make the entire formula alkaline. Your finished product should still sit in a skin-friendly pH of approximately 5–6, which is where tranexamic acid remains stable and effective.
If your pH drifts slightly upward after adding tranexamic acid, simply adjust with a very small amount of lactic acid or citric acid solution until you reach your target.
