Tranexamic acid is a highly regarded cosmetic active that has become a favourite in modern formulations for creating the appearance of a more even, luminous complexion. Formulators value it for its ability to support clarity and help improve the look of uneven tone, discolouration and post-blemish marks, especially in leave-on products such as serums and essences.

Lightweight, gentle and well tolerated, tranexamic acid works beautifully in brightening-style formulations and performs exceptionally well alongside niacinamide, vitamin B5 (panthenol) and hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid. It is water soluble, easy to use and suitable for most skin types, making it a versatile choice for both beginner and advanced formulators.

Formulation Notes

• Tranexamic acid is water soluble and is best added to the water phase, either before gelling or before emulsification in creams and lotions.

• It can be combined with ingredients such as niacinamide, vitamin E, D-panthenol, glycerin and hyaluronic acid, and works well in both simple and more advanced water-based formulations.

• Tranexamic acid is not particularly heat sensitive and tolerates typical cosmetic processing temperatures. It can be heated to around 70–75°C as part of a standard emulsion water phase. Brief exposure to up to ~80°C is generally acceptable, but avoid unnecessary prolonged high heat once fully dissolved.

• The raw ingredient dissolves most readily at a neutral to slightly alkaline pH (around pH 7–8), which is normal. When used at typical cosmetic levels (1–3%), it does not make the finished formula alkaline.

• Finished products should be adjusted to a skin-friendly pH of approximately 5–6, where tranexamic acid remains stable and well suited to leave-on skincare.
