Vetiver essential oil

Vetiver essential oil is steam distilled from the dense, aromatic root system of Vetiveria zizanoides, a perennial grass traditionally cultivated in India. The roots have long been used for woven matting and cooling screens, and the oil remains highly valued for its deep, earthy aroma and fixative qualities.

Often referred to as the “oil of tranquillity” in India, vetiver is best known for its grounding scent profile and its role as a base note in perfumery and aromatherapy blends.

Aroma & General Use

Vetiver essential oil has a strong, woody, earthy aroma with warm, smoky undertones. In aromatherapy, it is commonly used in blends intended to create a calming, centring atmosphere and is often chosen for its traditional association with relaxation, focus, and emotional balance.

Its rich scent also makes it well suited to diffusers, room sprays, and home fragrance products where depth and longevity are desired.

Perfumery & Formulation

As a base note, vetiver is widely used in natural perfumery to anchor lighter citrus and floral notes and extend the life of fragrance blends. It pairs particularly well with woods, resins, florals, and vanilla-type aromas.

Vetiver essential oil has a naturally heavy and viscous consistency, thicker than most essential oils. It is supplied with a dripulator cap, though a pipette can be useful for more precise measurement when formulating.

Creative & Practical Applications

Vetiver is commonly incorporated into soaps, candles, and other scented products to add warmth and complexity. It has also been traditionally used in insect-repellent style blends and craft applications where a deep, earthy aroma is desired.
