Make your own solid shampoo and conditioner bars

Note: No mould and no physical instructions sheets are included in packs. Instructions are below.

Create both solid shampoo bars and solid conditioner bars at home with this starter or refill pack. Solid bars are a simple way to reduce plastic bottles in the shower, and when cared for properly, they last a long time.

This pack contains all the ingredients needed to make one batch of shampoo bars and one batch of conditioner bars, with instructions provided below.

Makes approximately 300g of solid shampoo mixture and 300g of solid conditioner mixture.

What You’ll Need at Home

For the shampoo bars:

• Moulds
• Heatproof pot
• Spatula
• Dust mask (recommended when handling powdered surfactants)
• Knife
• Stick blender (highly recommended)

For the conditioner bars:

• Moulds
• Heatproof pot or jug
• Spatula
• Equipment to make a double boiler
  (a large pot plus a smaller pot or heatproof jug)

Moulds and colours are not included and can be purchased separately.

Important Note on Cocoa Butter

Due to a current global cocoa butter shortage, this pack temporarily contains natural (non-deodorised) cocoa butter rather than deodorised cocoa butter.

While used at a relatively low percentage, the natural cocoa aroma may subtly influence or compete with added essential oils or fragrance oils. Many customers enjoy the soft chocolate note, but it’s worth keeping in mind when choosing your fragrance.

Instructions

Solid Shampoo Method

1. Melt Step 1 and Step 2 ingredients
   Add all Step 1 and Step 2 ingredients to a heatproof pot and gently heat.

   Wear a dust mask while handling powdered surfactants. Open windows where possible and use an extractor fan if available. Avoid having children nearby, as fumes released while melting SCI can be irritating.

   SCI can take time to melt fully, so keep the heat gentle and stir continuously to avoid burning. Towards the end, using a stick blender can help speed things up and create a smoother consistency. Continue heating and mixing until the mixture forms a thick, paste-like texture.

2. Add Step 3 ingredients
   Remove the pot from the heat and stir or blend in the Step 3 ingredients until fully combined. A stick blender will give a smoother finished bar.

3. Mould and set
   Spoon the mixture into moulds using a spatula. Smooth the tops as best you can. A perfectly smooth finish can be tricky and is not essential.

   The mixture sets quickly. If it becomes too firm while filling, return it briefly to gentle heat to soften.
   Place moulds in the fridge to set fully.

To use:
Wet hair and apply the shampoo bar directly to the hair, or rub between hands to create lather. Massage into the scalp and hair as you would with liquid shampoo, then rinse. Follow with conditioner.

Leave the bar out to air dry between uses.

Solid Conditioner Method

1. Prepare a double boiler
   Place a heatproof jug carefully inside a pot of gently simmering water.

2. Melt Step 1 ingredients
   Add all Step 1 ingredients to the jug and gently heat until fully melted. Do not allow the mixture to boil.

3. Add Step 2 ingredients
   Remove from heat and stir in the Step 2 ingredients until fully combined.

4. Mould and set
   Pour into moulds and refrigerate for 2–3 hours, or place in the freezer to speed things up. Once fully firm, remove from moulds.

To use:
Apply the conditioner bar to wet hair after shampooing. Massage through the lengths and rinse clean.
Leave the bar out to air dry between uses.

About the Ingredients

Some of the ingredients in this pack may be unfamiliar, so here is a brief overview of their role in the formulas.

Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (SCI)
A coconut oil–derived surfactant that is exceptionally mild on skin, hair and eyes. SCI produces a creamy, luxurious lather and is widely used in solid shampoo bars.

Conditioner pellets (BTMS-25)
A high-performance conditioning emulsifier commonly used in both rinse-off and leave-on hair products. It provides excellent slip, detangling and softness.

Cetearyl alcohol
A fatty alcohol used as a thickener and structure builder in hair and skincare formulations. Made from sustainably sourced RSPO mass balance certified palm oil.

Decyl glucoside
A mild, plant-derived surfactant from the alkyl polyglucoside (APG) family. Known for its gentle cleansing properties and strong environmental profile.

Lactic acid
Produced from fermented corn. Used to support bar hardness, longevity and overall performance.

Hydrolysed quinoa
A plant-based protein rich in amino acids that supports hair strength, softness and shine.

Coco caprylate
A lightweight emollient derived from coconut oil that provides slip and conditioning.

Organic glycerin
A plant-derived humectant that attracts and retains moisture.

Microcare DB
An Ecocert-approved broad-spectrum preservative suitable for water-containing products.
