Coconut & hemp oil cleansing balm

Coconut & hemp oil cleansing balm

Coconut oil magically melts away all makeup, including waterproof eye makeup, dirt and everyday grime from your skin. It is also solid at room temperature which gives this cleanser the added bonus of being great for travelling (provided you're not on your way to a hot tropical island!).

Coconut oil has antibacterial, anti-fungal and antimicrobial properties, plus it's very moisturising. This makes it great for dry skin types. Those with oily or combination skin types who are wanting to use an oil cleanser can still do so but are recommended to try a lighter, liquid oil cleanser. (For example you could switch the coconut oil for camellia oil and store it in a bottle rather than a pot. Or check out our Passionfruit oil cleanser recipe.

This cleanser is enriched with hemp oil which adds calming skin benefits and also gives it the gorgeous green colour. We have also included vitamin E to give this cleanser an antioxidant boost for a longer shelf life.

Bonus: This can also double as a full body moisturiser! Just wait for it to fully absorb before getting dressed to avoid oil stains.

Recipe
Makes 100g - use our Batch Size Calculator and the percentages provided here to easily adjust the volume of your batch.

Phase A
89g | 89% Coconut oil, virgin, certified organic

Phase B
10g | 10% Hemp seed oil, certified organic
1g | 1% Vitamin E

Method
  • Weigh the coconut oil into a beaker
  • Place in a pot of hot water on the stove, careful not to let any water splash into the beaker
  • Once the coconut oil has melted take off the heat and stir in the hemp seed oil and vitamin E
  • Pour into a pot
To use - Watch our how-to video below!
Use a clean spoon to get the balm on out of the pot, this way you don't risk contaminating the pot with dirt or moisture with your fingers.
Apply to the face in a circular motion, massaging into skin.
To remove use a warm damp face cloth.

Substitutions
Coconut oil - We have used organic virgin coconut oil in this formula to get the full spectrum of skin benefits, including that gorgeous coconut aroma, however if you would prefer an odourless cleanser then you could use RBD coconut oil which will function the same.
Hemp oil - You can use any carrier oil you like in place of the hemp oil, just be aware this will change the look of the final product. Or you could leave the additional oil out entirely and make up the percentage with more coconut oil.

Now let's talk about DOUBLE cleansing!
You can cleanse your skin with your oil cleanser and be done with it, or you can follow with another water based cleanser, such as cream, gel or micellar water, to ensure all the oil from the cleanser has been cleaned off. Sometimes I like to do this maybe even every second evening or just a couple of times a week. Just to really refresh my skin.
